  3. Malabar coast; area 32 sq km/12 sq mi;
  4. population (1981) 40,000. The administrative
  5. headquarters is on Kavaratti Island. Products
  6. include coir, copra, and fish. The religion
  7. is Muslim. The first Western visitor was
  8. Vasco da Gama 1499. They were British from
  9. 1877 until Indian independence, and were
  10. created a Union Territory of the Republic of
  11. India 1956. Formerly known as the Laccadive,
  12. Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands, they were
  13. renamed Lakshadweep 1973.
